Designing, modeling and isometric delivery for construction of a gas gathering station in Saudi Arabia

Project Overview

This project involved routing (approximate 2250 lines), modeling in PDS, extracting isometrics with MTO using isogen for all lines less than 2”NB for a gas gathering station in Saudi Arabia.

The project environment was offline workshare, where engineers from design offices in London, Rome and Rolta, Mumbai were working on the same project concurrently.

Client Profile

The client is one of the most reputed engineering design and construction companies in the UK and globally.

Business Situation

Independent design offices from London and Rome were designing a gas plant in Saudi Arabia concurrently. Some of the design activities were behind schedule and as a part of a catch-up plan, the consortium thought of outsourcing some portion of their detail engineering work to a competent design firm with PDS modeling expertise.

Client representatives visited Rolta to judge the competency. After being convinced about Rolta's capabilities and expertise, the client agreed in principle to outsource some portion of the design and modeling work to Rolta, Mumbai

Client provided P&IDs and design standards to develop a PDS model for about 2250 small bore pipelines which could be merged with their main model.

Solution

Since the live model was being updated every day, Rolta proposed to Client to upload PDS 3D model on e-room through remote host from the UK. The same was downloaded every alternate day onto Rolta’s servers.

PDS 3D Model consisted of all 2”NB and above lines, equipments, structures, electrical cable trays, pipe racks, facility buildings etc.

Based on the P&IDs, design notes and model, detailing of small bore lines was carried out and modeled.
Following were the deliverables by Rolta:

  • Model archival with all small bore model lines every alternate day.
  • .dgn, .idf and .b files in soft format as per agreed delivery schedule.
  • Scanned .pdf files of self-approved isometrics issued for construction.

All above deliverables were through e-room and transmittal.

Business Benefits:

Rolta completed the project to client’s satisfaction. The client periodically reviewed project output and was thoroughly satisfied with the schedule and quality of the output. The client has said it would be happy to involve Rolta as its key business partner in future projects as well.
