Georgia Power Company

Atlanta-based Georgia Power provides electricity to customers in 155 of Georgia’s 159 counties. A key element of its business strategy is to help new industries recognise the advantages of setting up base in Georgia. They can then bring with them secondary and tertiary businesses, along with new residents employed in these new companies. All this of course adds to Georgia Power’s customer base.
Georgia Power set up the Georgia Resource Center (GRC) to showcase the benefits the state had to offer. Its biggest challenge was to present a compelling business case to each prospective investor in a manner that would specifically address his particular business drivers. It needed to bring in a sufficient `Wow’ factor to attract investors.

In the summer of 2005, Georgia Power entrusted the GRC with the responsibility of developing a comprehensive solution that could effectively present the Georgia story.

The Solution

This solution was designed to meet the many demanding specifications laid down by GRC. It had to be able to access data from many disparate databases with geospatial and non-geospatial data. This data had to be accessed over the Web as the databases were maintained by different agencies. A key requirement was that the solution had to be extremely flexible and configurable -- without having to resort to programming -- to meet individual client aspirations in an ever-changing economic landscape. Rolta offered a customized solution built around the OnPoint suite of software. With its Redlining, Web-Editor and Cartographic Quality Map extensions, Rolta’s solution comprehensively met GRC’s needs.

The Result

GRC has appreciated the incredible value of OnPoint, and all that it can do with its own staff behind the wheel. It gives them traditional search capabilities, but across a variety of databases. Plus a whole lot more with OnPoint multi-level join capabilities, and links to external web services such as Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth.

Armed with ruggedized laptops, GRC staff has taken these capabilities to the field to prospective investors, and can visit sites and analyze options on the spot using this OnPoint implementation. It has helped GRC staff to bring out that `Wow’ factor onsite!

GRC’s Team Leader, Stan Vangilder, had this to say about the OnPoint solution and Rolta’s services: “Although we've always been impressed with OnPoint 5, we are blown away by the capabilities of OnPoint 6. The administration tools are very powerful, yet intuitive. We’ll be able to simply adjust our OnPoint configuration as needed over time and use its extensive interoperability to link our system to other existing resources. This approach should save significant time and money AND multiply our effectiveness by taking advantage of other great applications and databases available to us. It has been a pleasure working with the Rolta / Orion team. They have become our partners in innovation."
