Mapping using Satellite Imagery

Thematic mapping using satellite imagery is a low-cost solution, based on the available image of a specific area in a digital format. It uses symbols, patterns or colors to display information about a map's underlying data, often revealing relationships that are otherwise obscured. It's best used to convey meaningful information to people who make decisions.

At Rolta, we produce thematic maps from satellite images for various requirements like agriculture, forestry, municipal / rural mapping, geology and transportation. We use high-resolution satellite images to produce thematic maps up to a scale of 1:4000 with good accuracy.

We have a dedicated team to carry out ground surveys, backed by a large production facility to create thematic maps according to customers’ requirements. The thematic map can be made intelligent by delineating various themes such as water bodies, forest cover, agriculture etc, and providing detailed data indexed to each theme that is then put in a database for analysis and decision-making.

Rolta has a partnership with Intergraph to offer advanced imaging solutions for satellite imagery exploitation. We undertake turnkey projects for setting up Image Interpretation Systems for online processing of satellite images and to deliver value-added products such as cross-country mobility maps, situational maps, image maps of trans-border terrain etc.

Rolta has the domain expertise for image processing, map updation, and other remote sensing applications. We have focused on GIS, spatial analysis and thematic mapping to help our industry clients better understand and interpret their requirements. Applications areas include:

  • Forestry and vegetation mapping
  • Geo-morphological mapping
  • Water resources mapping
  • Land use / land cover mapping
  • Change detection
  • Geospatial intelligence solutions for defense

Services

  • Georeferencing (georegistration): More often than not, satellite imagery is supplied in a "raw" state, containing geometric errors. If accurate area, direction, and distance measurements are required, the raw image must be processed to remove these geometric errors and rectified to a real-world coordinate system. We deliver accurate georeferenced images.
  • Image mosaicing: A mosaic is an assemblage of two or more overlapping images (tiles) used to create a continuous representation of a predefined area. Georeferenced images are used to construct the mosaic; software is used to automatically place each image in its correct position. Hundreds or even thousands of individual images can be mosaiced to produce a single digital image of a large area.
  • Image enhancement: Image enhancement refers to the many tools that are used to digitally process image data to enhance visual interpretation. Image processing produces a seamless raster data product from multiple image tiles. The image is then trimmed to specified finished-product dimensions
