GLAMS: An Integrated GIS and MIS Solution for the Airports Authority of India
GIS-based Land and Asset Management System (GLAMS) is a GIS and MIS integrated solution for the land and assets of an airport for the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Project Overview
The project involved developing a GIS-based customized solution that manages spatial and non-spatial data on the assets/ infrastructure of an airport. It is a desktop solution to manage the following datasets for land and asset/ infrastructure management:
The web-based solution allows spatial data to be monitored across departments -- civil, CNS (communication, navigation, surveillance), electrical, ATC (air traffic control), land records, equipments section and fire. The system executes tasks -- storage and retrieval, querying and reporting, updating projection system, accessing multiple GIS data types, etc.
Client Profile
The AAI was formed on 1st April 1995 by merging the International Airports Authority of India and the National Airports Authority. The aim was to accelerate the integrated development, expansion and modernization of the operational, terminal and cargo facilities at the country’s airports to conform to international standards.
Business Situation
The AAI manages the infrastructure facilities of 122 airports spread all over India. These airports and the areas surrounding them are prone to encroachments. To monitor such encroachments and for rapid planning, AAI was planning to use GIS so that it could track land and assets.
A pilot was developed and successfully deployed at one airport of India. Currently, we are in the process of deploying the same application with enhancements at 17 more airports.

Client Testimonial
“Rolta India Limited was awarded the work for a pilot project to be done at Jaipur Airport for a GIS-Based Land & Asset Management System (GLAMS) through an open tender process. Though we provided qualitative requirements for the GLAMS project in the tender based on our concept and vision, it was mostly related to automation of land records. However, the actual delivery of system was much more than what we have envisaged. Civil, electrical, CNS (communication, navigation & surveillance) and fire assets, along with land assets, were included on GIS as well as MIS in the GLAMS package, with a display on a GIS web interface. This has made it possible for AAI users to get maps and data online at all AAI locations connected to the intranet. We appreciate the additional efforts put in by Rolta India Limited and their patience in completing this project to our satisfaction.
“GLAMS has provided such a powerful and effective online tool that immediately after the commissioning of the GLAMS pilot project at Jaipur Airport, Rolta India Limited was awarded the work of implementing similar system at 17 more airports in Phase I. The GLAMS implementation at 17 airports also provides a consolidation reporting module for Regional and Corporate Headquarters.
“AAI is planning extending the GLAMS system to other important airports."
